Nutrition During Pregnancy – Important Facts

So, let’s start at the beginning…

Firstly, you need to improve your diet. You need to start thinking about healthy eating even before you look to conceive. You need 3 square meals a day, not forgetting your 5 a day of fruit and vegetables. Also for good hydration drink lots of water and other fluids. Take vitamin supplements. Now, these should not be a substitute for a healthy balanced diet but to ensure you are getting all your vitamins and minerals. Your main priority is taking folic acid which is a B vitamin that helps to prevent neural tube defects in developing babies. Also, there are specific multi-vitamin and mineral tablets on the market specifically for pregnant women. If you are unsure, speak to your doctor or midwife for advice.

The first exciting trimester

Whilst you are on a high from your good baby news, you are likely to be feeling very sick and tired. Eating foods that contain vitamin B6 can help to ease any nausea you may be feeling. And as your blood volume increases, you need iron to keep you well. During this time, it is important for your baby that you eat dishes which are high in folate which is good for your baby’s developing nervous system.

The second trimester

Even though during this middle phase of your pregnancy you are likely to be feeling better with more energy, don’t forget your nutritional needs. During this stage you need to eat plenty of dishes that are rich in vitamin D and calcium to help your baby grow strong bones and teeth. Also pay particular attention to eating dishes containing omega 3 fatty acids, which are important for your baby’s brain development. You need to choose foods that allow you to have the safe form of vitamin A. If you are unsure on this, speak to your doctor or midwife for advice. Read the rest of this entry »
